Q What are gas regulators used for? Should every barbie bottle have
one attached when being used? Is there a standard type that is used for the barbie?

A Andy, in a nutshell, regulators control the PRESSURE of the gas available to the barby.
The
control knobs are used to adjust the actual VOLUME of the gas to the burners.
Regulators are basically comprised of a diaphragm that reduces the pressure
of the
gas so it comes out of the burners at a usable rate of flow (ie not in the
form of a single 40 foot flame that lasts for about a second).
Yes, every barby should have one. And that goes for natural gas as well as
LPG (but the two systems require different types of regulators).
Hope that makes things a bit clearer.
