Q I have just bought my first bbq, and since I know nothing about
them and am sure I will not roast anything, I bought the cheapest
($200) 4-burner flat in Kmart. But it seems to satisfy all your basic
criteria, such as a hole for lighting with a match and a flame tamer.
What should I look out for? I know I'll never read a barbecue recipe
book but is there an internet source of good simple recipes for
beginners like the one on your site for cooking steak?

A Hi Boris and congratulations
on your barby purchase and for your
honesty is saying how you intend to use it. Most Aussie males reckon
they're the world's best chefs the second they turn on the gas knob for
the first time.
I know you said you will never read a barbecue book but a recently released
one could be worth making an exception. It's by Allan Campion and is called
'Secret Men's BBQ Business'. Take a look at it in a bookstore and make up
your own mind.
There's not many sites out there with basic recipes.I suggest you try
www.barbecuen.com
. Go to the According to Smoky section and have a look
around. Smoky Hale has a very down-to-earth approach to barbecuing.
However, please be aware that it is very much an American site and they
don't tend to use flat top barbecues like we do in Australia. So you'll have to
make a few
allowances.
Hope this helps.
